Plenty of short-ingredient-list liquids aren't preservative-free by magic — they're pasteurized. Heating the product kills microbes and buys months of shelf life without adding a thing to the label. But heat has a cost: it degrades delicate, heat-sensitive ingredients, and for liposomal liquids it can break down the very liposomes you're paying for.

Synthetic Antimicrobials

Fake it as they make it

The most common route is a synthetic antimicrobial — potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, parabens — designed to stop mold, yeast, and bacteria from growing. The concerns are specific: sodium benzoate can react with vitamin C to form benzene, a recognized carcinogen, and parabens are widely studied as hormone (endocrine) disruptors.

Synthetic Antioxidants

A toxic situationship

Microbes aren't the only thing that spoils a formula — the oils in it can go rancid, too. To stop that, many products add synthetic antioxidants like BHA and BHT. It's a different job, same shortcut: BHA is listed by the U.S. National Toxicology Program as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen," based on animal evidence.
